Newlands Corner
UPDATE 19 May 2024 - The map has been updated slightly to show the new positions of controls 6 & 16.
Newlands Corner is in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is owned by the Albury Estate and managed by Surrey County Council. It lies on the chalk ridge of the North Downs at a height of over 170m (500ft). The Downs command fine views across the Weald to the ridge of the South Downs. There are 103 hectares (255 acres) of open chalk downland and peaceful woodlands to explore. The woodlands are mixed, with some deciduous trees like oak and birch, plus evergreen yew. Some of the yew trees are hundreds of years old.
The start and finish are at the far end of the car park.
The orienteering course is in the woods and on the open grassland. The maps show 16 controls. The easiest route is to take controls 1 through 9 in order and then finish. This is white/yellow standard, on footpaths and takes a beginner about 12 - 25 minutes to complete.
To make more challenging courses some or all of the extra controls can be included.
